Background of the Study
Substance abuse among teenagers is a growing concern globally, and peer pressure is one of the most significant factors contributing to early initiation and continued use of drugs and alcohol. Peer pressure can either encourage or discourage substance use, often influencing adolescent behavior more than family or individual factors. A teenager’s susceptibility to peer pressure can be affected by several factors, including their self-esteem, social skills, and family environment (Akinmoladun & Bello, 2023).
In Nigeria, peer pressure is a known factor in the increased rates of substance abuse among adolescents, with studies indicating a rising prevalence of drug use in schools and communities. Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Uyo provides treatment to teenagers struggling with substance abuse, yet the specific role of peer pressure in substance use behaviors among Nigerian adolescents has not been widely studied. This research aims to examine how peer pressure influences substance abuse among teenagers in Akwa Ibom State, particularly within the context of treatment at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uyo.
Statement of the Problem
Substance abuse among adolescents in Nigeria is a significant public health concern, and peer pressure is often cited as a key driver of early initiation and persistent use. However, the influence of peer pressure on substance abuse behaviors in Nigerian adolescents has not been sufficiently investigated in clinical settings. This study seeks to assess how peer pressure contributes to substance abuse among teenagers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and the implications for treatment and prevention strategies.
